With a Heated Jacket from Milwaukee!
It’s one thing to stay warm on the job site; it’s quite another thing to stay warm and still be able to move. Parkas and coats and 30 layers of thermal underwear can provide a comfort factor but it is hard to get anything done when you feel like you’re trying to move around inside of a stack of tires.
The Milwaukee Electric Tool Corporation has come up with a stylish solution to the problem: the M12 Heated Jacket Kit. The jacket itself is made of a comfortable and lightweight combination polyester/spandex and it features three heating zones on the chest and back. The water and wind resistant M12 comes with two side hand pockets and a cell-phone pocket on the front so you’ll be ready for any job in any weather.
The heating elements are powered by Milwaukee’s trademarked M12 Red Lithium battery. Until recently the major drawback of lithium batteries was that they did not perform well in cold weather, but the new M12s (and M18s for other cordless tools) have demonstrated that they are capable even in temperatures well below zero. The batteries will also last for a good six hours before they need a 30-minute re-charge. When in use, the battery sits inside a convenient pocket on the back of the jacket so that it will not hinder your movement.
These jackets are great for work and all-around wear, and they are backed by the quality of Milwaukee Tools. They are becoming a “must-have” item for hardworking people who have to endure the cold, and they can take a lot of the sting out our Canadian winters.

Everybody who doesn’t want to save money and be more comfortable in an environmentally friendly way should leave now. For the rest of you, and we can see that nobody has departed, the following information will be music to your ears. Manitoba Hydro has an excellent Home Insulation Program that is designed to help achieve these goals.
It’s no secret that a properly insulated home is not only more comfortable year-round, but a well insulated building also requires significantly less energy to heat and cool, which means lower expenses and a reduced environmental impact. And, under the guidelines of the Home Insulation Program, further savings may be realized when you upgrade your insulation, in the form of rebates on portions of the cost of insulation.
At North American Lumber we are pleased to be able to offer our assistance in this worthy endeavor.
There are three basic steps to take in order to comply with the Home Insulation Program, and they are as follows:
1. Qualify – In order to qualify for the Program you must meet both eligibility requirements and Power Smart Insulation standards. Both can be accessed through the Manitoba Hydro website at: http://www.hydro.mb.ca/your_home/home_insulation.shtml
2. Insulate – This is where North American Lumber comes in. We only deal with quality products and manufacturers such as Johns Manville, Guardian, Dow and Plasti-Fab.
3. Get Your Rebate – North American Lumber can assure you that the products you buy will be the products you need to have to qualify for the Program, and our professionals are more-than-happy to work with you in developing your plan.

Winter is here, and it’s a great time for some of those indoor projects you’ve been meaning to get around to. One great beautification upgrade is the installation of a Jeld-Wen interior door. It is an easy project for the do-it-yourselfer, and North American Lumber has everything you need to get the job done. From tape measures and safety glasses to hammers and finishing nails, North American Lumber has what you need, and they handle a complete line of high quality Jeld-Wen door products.
The successful project starts with accurate measurements (remember the old saying: “measure twice, cut once”) so that your door will be cut to fit your opening precisely. The next steps are to paint your door (easier to do before it is installed) and fit it into the opening where you will temporarily secure and level it with shims. When the door is properly in place you will fasten the jamb with finishing nails and then remove the shims. After that all that’s left is to install the trim and the hardware.
The Jeld-Wen folks have provided a great video that will walk you through the project and help you immensely, and the knowledgeable professionals at North American Lumber will assist you in selecting the right tools and materials.
When your friends come over to watch Stanley Cup action at your house you are going to have to drag them to the television room because they’re all going to want to spend their time oohing and aahing over your handi-work. Call North American Lumber today and get that project moving.
Inefficient use of energy isn’t just expensive, it can be downright uncomfortable, even as it puts a strain on the power grid. In Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Ontario, where average temperatures can stay below the freezing mark for six months of the year, it is imperative that people learn to use their power wisely. As it is, almost a quarter of all home energy use is devoted to heating.
There are steps you can take to increase the comfort level of your home even as you minimize the power usage required to maintain a healthy home environment. North American Lumber has served the public for more than 100 years and is proud to be able to share the following energy saving tips with you.
1. Furnaces – Your furnace gobbles more energy than any other appliance in the house. The best way to save energy and money is to install an efficient unit. Furnaces that carry the Energy Star label assure you that you will use less power than with a lesser-quality unit. Setting your thermostat to the proper level will also help you to better use your power.
2. Water Heater – Water heaters are second only to furnaces when it comes to power consumption. Save energy and save on your monthly bill by setting the heater thermostat to 55 degrees (Celsius). Don’t set it lower, because that could promote harmful bacterial growth. Insulating the heater and first metre of pipe can contribute to further savings.
3. Tub & Shower – If you are used to long hot showers or constantly adding more hot water to the bath, consider some reductions. For the shower, a low-flow aerated shower head can save you as much as 15% on the monthly power bill.
These are just a few suggestions to consider. For more information call the North American Lumber location nearest to you, and our professional staff can help guide you to an even more efficient way to spend your money and energy. Check the store locator on this website.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t take more than a sliver of a crack in your home’s perimeter for the icy cold temperatures outside to start eroding your cozy nest and forcing your heat system to work even harder to keep the chill out. Here’s some tips on the small ways to seal up those leaks in your home’s perimeter and keep the drafts from forcing your fuel bills higher.

Insulation of all types is rated according to its R Value or its heat flow resistance rating. Put simply, the higher the R Value rating on a particular type of insulation, the greater the insulation value you are receiving. Your insulation ‘resists’ the warm air attempting to escape from your home during the cold winter months. The greater the R Value the more resistance is available and the longer the warm air will remain within your home. This takes some of the burden off your heating system and allows it operate more efficiently, using less energy.
It is important to note, however, that the R Value of a particular insulation can be affected by improper installation methods. If insulation is compressed or it is installed unevenly the R Value can be greatly diminished. Proper installation is critical to receiving the maximum R Value from your insulation.
In Canadian homes, an R Value minimum of 40 is recommended for ceilings and a minimum R value of 30 is recommended for the walls of a home. If you are uncertain as to the R Value of your current insulation and what insulation products are available for use in your home situation, one of our knowledgeable team members would be happy to answer your questions.
